The West Pier is perhaps the most famous symbol of Brighton. Opened in 1866 to great fanfare, it finally closed its doors in 1975. Two grand fires in 2003 caused irreparable damage to the structure and it is now declared by English Heritage to be beyond repair.
When the tide is low and the sun sets in the winter sun you will find many a photographer pointing their lens at this ageing marvel of a bygone era.
